8 Ways That Youre Accidentally Demotivating Your Team Keeping your team happy and motivated is extremely important for any employer. Motivation not only improves productivity and performance levels, but it also means employees will feel happier in the workplace which will improve retention and performance of the team. So youve tried to put some effort into motivating your employees, but its not working. So what mistakes are you making thats destroying your workforces motivation? 1) Your office space is terrible: It may not seem like a very important aspect of working life, but office space can actually have a huge effect on employees and their motivation. Its understandable that walking into a gloomy office isnt going to be the best for inspiring people. And no, we cant all have offices like Google or Facebook, but even simple tactics such as introducing some plants or giving the space a lick of paint can all work wonders. So start off small and your office can change the mood of the workforce inside it. 2) You dismiss ideas: Theres nothing more de-motivational then having your fresh ideas dismissed immediately. This is why its important to listen to your colleagues and really consider their ideas. Being shot down by your colleagues or mangers can take its toll on confidence and with a lack of confidence often comes a lack of motivation. So even if your employees ideas are completely different to yours, consider giving  them a chance. 3) Theres no  chance for development: Something that many companies often find spurs on their colleagues is the opportunity for growth within the company. And this doesnt have to be crazy pay rises or huge promotions. it can simply be the opportunity for them to learn new things and have a bit of training. The best way to motivate employees this way is to invite speakers and guests in for training or talks. Employees will appreciate this and feel like they are growing with the company. 4) You hold pointless meetings: Theres nothing worse than pointless meetings. Not only do they waste a lot  of time (on average 3.8 hours week!), they also decrease employees motivation alongside this. So sack the pointless meetings, and only hold them if they are truly necessary. A email is often enough. 5) You micromanage: If you spend a large amount of time searching and hiring the best talent, then you should never have to micromanage your workforce. Giving your workforce the autonomy to make their own decisions is important for both your company and the employees themselves. It allows employees to come up with new ways of doing things, and also means the employees will have a real passion for the work they are doing. 6) You blame others for things: Blaming employees for mistakes creates an atmosphere in the office which makes employees fearful of their workplace which obviously is never going to work for motivation. The worse kind of management is the type of boss who will take credit for all the good things and blame others for the bad things. Dont be that type of boss! 7) No vision: If your brand has no vision, how can you expect your employees to have one too? A great way to motivate your employees is to include them in the vision of your brand. This way it boosts motivation and also shows that you truly care about your employees. 8) You never speak to the face-to-face: Despite one of these points being to avoid holding pointless meetings, its also important to make sure you give employees enough actual face-to-face time individually. The best way to end every work day

The best way to end every work day If you’re ambitious and self-starting then this new habit is for you. It will only take 5 minutes each day and it’s probably something you’re already familiar with: writing a diary. But this diary is different; It’s a journal of your career and a place to log notes on your successes, challenges, ideas and mindset. You may be asking yourself, Okay, but how does this benefit me and fast-track my career? Close your eyes and now list the five tasks that you most enjoyed working on last month. Hard to remember, isn’t it! By logging your observations each day, you can keep an accurate record of what inspires and motivates you in order to help inform all your important career decisions and objective settings. How to write a work journal. To get started, I suggest drawing a quick template in a notepad or word document. Draw two columns and title one: Engaging and the other: Draining. Then, write the days of the week in rows below. At the end of each work day, pull out your journal and write a few bullet points under each column related to the day youve just had. Be sure to question and identify the reason why this task or project made you feel this way. It could be something to do with the environment you were in, people you were working with or the nature of the task itself. Every few weeks, take a look over your notes and highlight any common themes. You should also consider any ideas or opportunities you have to propel your development. These are priceless little nuggets of wisdom that youll be so glad you have next time your review period comes around!

Five steps to higher productivity One of the best ways to distinguish yourself at work is through productivity. Were all sifting through too much email, we all have more work than we can ever get done, and we all have access to more information than we could ever consume. The people who make the best decisions about how to process this information quickly and effectively are the people who will stand out in the workplace. Productivity Is a Skill It used to be that people went to work from 9 to 5, and if you were serious about your career you worked much longer hours. But few people still aspire to a 9-to-5 job, and most of us use productivity tools to manage our time in a way that facilitates a great personal life and a great work life. Thousands of people read productivity tips on Lifehacker.com every day of the week, and dissect David Allens bestselling book Getting Things Done with the fervor of an English lit student explicating Ulysses. Productivity skills are a new measure of career potential, so you need to develop them. Here are five suggestions for how to excel at productivity. 1. Do the most important thing first. Gina Trapani, the editor of Lifehacker.com, calls this a morning dash. She sits down at her desk and does the No. 1 item on her to-do list so that she knows its finished. This requires a lot of prior planning. You need to write an accurate, prioritized list and you need to block out a portion of your morning to accomplish your No. 1 task uninterrupted. The hardest thing about living by a to-do list is that you have to constantly ask yourself the difficult question, Whats the most important thing to me right now? A good to-do list includes long-term and short-term projects, and it integrates all aspects of your life. Pick out lawn furniture is on the same list at go to the board meeting because both are competing for the same, limited amount of your time. 2. Keep your inbox empty. Your inbox is not your to-do list; your to-do list is something you compile and prioritize. If your inbox is your to-do list, then you have no control over what youre doing youve ceded it to whoever sends you an email next. Productivity wizards  experience less information overload because they deal with an email as soon as theyve read it respond, file, or delete. Nothing stays in the inbox. Reading each email four or five times while it languishes in your inbox is a huge waste of time, and totally impractical given the amount of email we all  receive. 3. Become a realist about time. You can schedule and schedule and schedule, but it wont do any good unless you get more realistic about time. Develop a sense of who in your life is good at estimating time and who isnt, because you need to be able to compensate for the people who mess up your schedule with poor time estimates. In general, though,  were all bad at estimating time. We overestimate how much time we have and cope poorly with the fact that what we do with our time changes from day to day. So  the first step toward being good at estimating time is to understand your own inherent weaknesses. Then, at least, you can start compensating. 4. Focus on what youre doing so you can do it faster and better. Most of the time, multitasking doesnt help you. It works for short, repetitive tasks that youre very familiar with. But you dont want to develop good work habits for boring work. Youd probably prefer to stretch your brain and try new things, and that kind of work requires focus. A wide range of research has shown that even if you can talk on the phone and use email and IM at the same time,  multitasking decreases your productivity. Our creative powers are compromised when we multitask. The other common culprit to focusing is lack of sleep. Some people think they can use caffeine to dull the need for sleep, but it catches up with them. Fortunately,  you only need a 10-minute nap  to get your brain back on track. And when youre making up for several nights of lost sleep, you dont need to make it all up you just need seven hours to get back on your game. 5. Delegate. Once you know whats most important to you in all aspects of your life, youll know what to delegate. And the answer will be almost everything. The hardest part of productivity is admitting that  you cant do everything. In fact, its the core of what being an adult is as a child, everything looks possible. Adults are hit quickly with the cold reality that  they can only do whats most important. So be very clear on what that is, and delegate as much of the other stuff as you can. At work, good delegating doesnt mean dumping your worst tasks on your co-workers. In fact, you often need to  delegate your most appealing work  and do some of the grunt work yourself. Because in the end, your No. 1 productivity goal is to get whats important done it doesnt matter who gets it done, and youre more likely to get a lot of help if you offer your fun stuff. This holds true for your home life, too  you can delegate a lot more at home than you think you can  without losing the things you care about most. Because of distance-learning, these students now have the option of Skyping-in and watching lectures live, rather than missing class. They can also have the option of watching filmed lectures at a later date.Another scenario is having faculty members located in city centers teach remotely from the main campus to students at university satellite campuses. Students may have lab assistants or other instructors in class to assist them with hands-on application of problem sets or discussions, but lecture components and course structure would be directed by the lead professor or faculty member.One major factor in the push toward online education options is the changing profile of a typical student. Many working professionals decide to pursue continuing education or develop entirely new skills, based on workplace or industry demand. The research further confirms that young workers are the least engaged generation in today’s workplace.  With people who belong to this generation known for being “job hoppers”, it is high time for organizations to adopt a different approach in order to retain young, talented staff members. Yet another report from Gallup confirms that 21 percent of millennials change jobs every year. This is three times higher than the percentage of non-millennials who report the same. With this kind of employee turnover costing the USA economy a whopping $30 billion annually,  the need for clear cut career paths is now more evident than ever. But why do millennials seem to demand so much unlike other workers? For starters, millennials tend to focus not only on the present but also the future perspectives of their careers. Besides demanding good compensation, they also have an innate need to feel secure in their job roles. It is worth noting that this generation is particularly interested in personal growth. In other words, organizations that don’t offer them well planned career paths are bound to lose them. According to PWC study titled “Managing tomorrow’s people â€" the future of work 2020”, most young workers expect to have 2 to 5 employers in their career. This underscores the need for breaking with tradition and introducing innovative policies to keep this generation of workers engaged. Indeed, appreciating the role of career paths to young employees can significantly keep attrition under control. Personal Growth Career paths comprise many varying forms of career progression. These include (but not limited to) dual career ladders, vertical career ladders, encore careers and horizontal career lattices. Young employees tend to feel better engaged when they understand that the human resource department is genuinely concerned about their growth. Implementing career paths also has a direct impact on staff morale, motivation, career satisfaction and responsiveness in meeting organizational goals. A new paradigm that has emerged is one where individuals want to be at least partly in control of their path. In light of such facts, HR departments need to allow their employees to have a voice in creation of their career path. Gone are the days when drawing a plan for employees involved filling a spreadsheet with trajectories. Today’s workforce wants an active role in making crucial decisions about their future. This necessitates deeper involvement of HR practitioners particularly in adopting a customized approach to talent management. Ongoing training is yet another important facet of career pathing. Given that the majority of them grew up at a time of rapid technological advancement, millennials are used to change. Compounding this with the fact that the job market is equally fluctuating, it is quite clear why young workers are highly determined to remain on top of their game. How are HR departments keeping up with these demands? Well, according to research by Deloitte, 63 percent of young workers feel their leadership skills are not being adequately honed. The research further alluded to the fact that organizations that train their youngest employees are more likely to retain them unlike those that don’t. There is therefore need for more investment in ongoing training among organizations that aim to keep their talent pool intact. Beyond The Entry-Level Conundrum Creating career paths for young workers involves more than just enhancing flexibility and ongoing training. Millennials thrive in new challenges. They don’t like to be stuck in an entry-level conundrum. As a matter of growth, they always look for ways to put their talents to better use. Lack of fresh challenges at the workplace can aggravate an already worse labor attrition problem across industries. Research by Man Power Group found out that two-thirds of young workers expected to be promoted in less than two years. This confirms their appetite for new challenges at the workplace. Ultimately, there is a huge need to proactively reshape the workplace given the fact that young workers are expected to form 50 percent of the global workforce by 2020. With increased likelihood of job rotations and demand for more freedom, millennials are clearly looking for well thought-out career paths.
